What to know while visiting Iran

Documents required for your Iran Visa
Visa Application Form

1 Original Passport with at least 6 months validity and minimum 3 blank pages. Also include all your old passports if any

2 Two scanned recent colour photographs.

3 Duly filled and signed visa application forms

4 Personal covering letter that explains your purpose to travel to Iran

5 Last three months original bank statement, stamped and updated with bank seal

6 Proof of return flight tickets back to your home country

7 Proof of accommodation in the form of hotel reservation for your entire stay

8 Day-wise travel itinerary outlining all elements of the trip

9 Approval for the visa from Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tehran

Additional documents are required for Iran visa for Indians as per your occupation and nature of visit -
1 For salaried persons:
  • Leave Sanctioned Certificate on company letter head providing approval for leave
  • Salary Slips of last three months
2 For self employed persons:
  • Business Proof: Registration License/MOA/Partnership deed.
  • Company Bank Statement: stamped & updated for last 6 months with bank seal
  • Company’s Income Tax Returns: of last 3 years
3. For retired persons:
  • Retirement Proof: pension book, statement etc
4 For students
  • Valid ID card issued by school, college or institute
5 For minors
  • Birth Certificate showing the names of both parents
  • Legalized Letter of Consent (NOC) if the child is travelling with one parent, the letter of consent authorizing travel must be legalized by the other parent
  • If the child is travelling alone or without either parent, a notarized letter of consent from both parents permitting travel
  • Death Certificate: in case one or both parents are deceased
  • ID proof of parents
6 For visiting friends or relatives
  • An invitation letter to your name declaring purpose of visiting Iran, relationship with the inviter and undertaking the responsibility for housing and related expenses during the guest's stay in Afghanistan.
  • ID proof of inviter: Valid Passport or Resident Permit
  • Address proof of Inviter: Utility bill
7 For sponsored visit
  • An invitation letter to your name declaring purpose of visiting Iran, relationship with the inviter and undertaking the responsibility for housing and related expenses during the guest's stay in Afghanistan.
  • ID proof of inviter: Valid Passport or Resident Permit
  • Address proof of Inviter: Utility bill

Most foreign nationals require a visa to enter Iran. Iran also provides an official e-Visa service for many nationalities. Note: visa exemptions/waiver rules can change by nationality — check the official e-visa portal or your embassy before applying.

Visa-on-arrival rules depend on nationality and port of entry. Many travellers should obtain an e-Visa or pre-approved visa before travel — do not assume on-arrival is available for your passport.

Tourist e-Visas usually do not require a private invitation, but business, work, and private visit visas commonly require an invitation or sponsor letter from Iran. Check the chosen visa category's requirements.
